Summary: The Groundskeeping Manager directs and supervises the operational and personnel activities of the groundskeeping team within the Zoo. This position, which reports to the Director of Operations, is responsible for overseeing landscape maintenance and animal exhibit landscaping projects, disease identification and treatment in turf/plants/trees, storm water management, pest control, equipment maintenance, snow removal, leaf removal, inclement weather clean-up, managing of payroll and non-payroll budgets, as well as personnel management which includes coaching, training, planning, and organizing.Essential Functions Plans, directs, manages, and leads the overall operation of the Zoo groundskeeping department to maintain a safe and attractive landscape, including assigning, training and evaluating work for grounds areas throughout the Zoo. Assures compliance with applicable health and safety standards. Manage and oversee all mowing, edging, fertilizing of lawns, and maintenance of all flower beds. Manager and oversees all cleaning and pressure washing of pathways and exterior of buildings receptacles Manage and oversee all pruning of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees using appropriate techniques. Assesses, develops, implements and evaluates necessary cultural practices for turf and tree care, irrigation, storm water management and pest control management Responsible for budget management; coordinates the requisitioning and purchasing of grounds supplies and equipment; controls and authorizes expenditures in accordance with established limitations and purchasing rules, develops contract specifications and scope of work. Trains and supervises the performance of assigned staff, interviews and selects employees and effects transfers, reassignments, terminations and disciplinary actions; assures substitute coverage as necessary. Communicates with administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities, resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information. Confers with Lead and others regarding grounds maintenance activities, coordinates and conducts site inspections; recommends actions for improvement as appropriate. Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or Equivalent 5 years related experience in landscape maintenance, integrated pest management and storm water management. Three years leading or supervising a crew of landscape technicians is also necessary to meet minimum requirements. Education and/or experience may substitute year-for-year for specific degree requirements. Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable three-year MVR history and proof of auto insurance.Preferred Education and Experience: Degree in Landscaping Technology or Horticultural ScienceCompetencies Critical thinking/Problem Solving. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud while on Zoo grounds.Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is constantly required to use hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
