Employment is temporary and may be limited to 1, 2, or 3-year terms.Under limited supervision, provides direction and support to appropriate school-based personnel to ensure management of student personal graduation plans to meet state requirements. Implements and maintains developed processes related to district academic counseling initiatives. Develops training and resources to support high school planning of student courses and endorsements to align with state standards and recommendations. Provides oversight of all HB5, Academic Counseling programs. Works with department leadership to monitor and assess compliance progress of graduation plan state requirements and district expectations. Collaborates with personnel in associated departments to identify best practices and develops practices for district and campus-based compliance reporting. Provides demonstrations and individual consultation at the school level to promote an established standard of practice throughout the district. Coordinates activities with students, parents, school-based administrators, and staff that facilitate long-term academic planning leading to college and career readiness. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES List most important duties first 1. Develops modules, presents training, and coaches school-based staff to facilitate compliance with state regulations regarding high school foundation plan development and implementation. 2. Provides demonstrations and individual coaching for school-based administrators and designated counseling services staff to develop an understanding and acceptance of district initiatives and expected practices, which support foundation and personal graduation plan compliance. 3. Monitors for compliance all academic counseling initiatives that are performed at the campus level. 4. Coordinates with other district-level departments to ensure services, initiatives, and results meet or exceed district expectations. 5. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. EDUCATION Master's Degree WORK EXPERIENCE 5 to 7 years A minimum of 3 years teaching experience and 2 years counseling experience TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION Teacher or School Counselor Certification preferred but not required Microsoft Office, Chancery, Naviance Office equipment (e.g. computer, copier) LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. Will provide work guidance, technical advice, and training to staff. WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT Work is substantially complex, varied and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities. BUDGET AUTHORITY No budget development activity is required. Prepares and presents to manager recommendations for budget. PROBLEM SOLVING Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion, including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across HISD. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters. IMPACT OF DECISIONS Decisions have moderate impact on the department, division, or schools causing increased satisfaction or dissatisfaction; producing efficiencies or delays; promoting or inhibiting personal intellectual or professional development; and contributing to success of district initiatives in schools. Errors may be serious, usually not subject to direct verification or check, causing loss of confidence in and support for district initiative. Effect usually confined to the organization itself and may be medium to long term. COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS Collaborates and solves problems, works with others to resolve problems and to clarify or interpret complex information/policies. Gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instruction and reporting results. Through skillful questioning, encourages thoughtfulness, creativity and innovation among others. Interactions are typically with school-based staff and administrators, senior level professional staff department manager and director. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS Regularly assesses and diffuses complex and escalated customer issues. Takes personal responsibility and accountability for solving systemic customer service problems. Regularly explores alternative and creative solutions to meeting the needs of the customer within HISD's policies and guidelines. WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions.
