The Senior Underwriting Consultant will analyze Financial Protection benefit plans (with a focus on Supplemental Health including Critical Illness, Accident and Hospital Indemnity) benefit plan characteristics and assess risks as to frequency and potential severity of loss of clients. They will utilize underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies. They will also build and maintain models to assist in the economic analysis of market alternatives. The Underwriting Consultant is responsible for the evaluation and recommendation of alternative pricing options and plan design changes based on analysis and trends. 

This role is part of National Accounts Specialty Benefits, Dental, Vision and Financial Protection (Life, Disability, Critical Illness, Accident and Hospital Indemnity) Underwriting, National Accounts. 

You’ll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S., preferably in Hartford, CT as you take on some tough challenges. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare financial experience rating calculations and other ongoing financial reviews that directly align with client strategies
  • Validate renewals and request for proposals for accuracy
  • Conduct competitive analysis of all coverage lines and present financial and contractual findings to Senior and Executive levels
  • Promote the use of established underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies 
  • Evaluate and negotiate potential alternatives and options for New Business and Renewal groups with internal and external customers 

This position is ideally located in Hartford, CT.  Other locations and telecommuting will be considered for highly experienced applicants.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of Group Underwriting experience in Financial Protection Life, Disability and/or Supplemental Health underwriting for any variety of products
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential job function of this role. Candidates located in states that mandate COVID-19 booster doses must also comply with those state requirements. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ degree in Math, Finance, Business, or related degree
  • 6+ years of business experience
  • 3+ years of experience with Risk Management
  • 3+ years of data analysis and reporting experience
  • 2+ years of presentation experience
  • Group underwriting experience
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $90,500 to $161,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
