BRAILLIST – Cascade Regional Inclusive Services Classification: Classified 190 day calendar Reports to: Cascade Regional Inclusive Services Director FSLA Status: Non Exempt POSITION OVERVIEW Braillists provide crucial access to printed materials for students who qualify for regional services in the category of visual impairment or deafblindness. This collaborative position works in tandem with Teachers of the Visually Impaired to produce Braille transcription of textbooks and other educational materials into one or more Braille codes (i.e. Nemeth, UEB, music, computer, and foreign language). In addition, this position produces tactile graphics according to BANA established guidelines as needed for Braille transcription. As a member of Cascade Regional Inclusive Services, the Braillist is a part of a dynamic team of professionals who offer support to school-district staff in Linn, Benton and Lincoln Counties. The mission of this program is to provide the necessary services for students who experience disabilities to access their education in a meaningful and successful way. This role requires a high degree of knowledge, flexibility, responsibility and independence. QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma. NLS Literary Braille, NLS Nemeth Braille and UEB Certifications. Ability to apply Print-to-Braille Format Guidelines as well as other codes as they apply. Strong knowledge of English grammar. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, Braille 2000, Duxbury, etc. Demonstrate proficiency in planning, organizing and coordinating assigned tasks. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the LBL Board of Directors/ Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable. GENERAL INFORMATION This position has the following expectations and prerequisite abilities. Maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA. Maintain compliance with state and federal laws governing all aspects of our agency including ORSs, OARs, IDEA, FOIA and CIPA. Be punctual in meeting deadlines, attending meetings and following schedules. Ability to lift, carry at least 25 pounds as well as ability to sit for extended periods of time in vehicle, desk and various sized school furniture. Ability to talk, hear and use hands and arms for tactile feeling, reaching and fine motor manipulation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS This is not necessarily an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills, and duties associated with this position. Prepare Braille materials using specialized computer software, equipment, tools, techniques and standards set forth by the Braille Authority of North America (BANA). Perform Braille transcription of textbooks into appropriate Braille codes. Accurately identify and use appropriate Braille codes and guidelines as needed for each project’s educational content. Prioritize Braille transcription requests to ensure materials are accessible to students in the timeliest manner possible. Proofread for accuracy of Braille materials. Produce tactile graphics according to BANA established guidelines as needed for Braille transcription. Utilize email and other electronic access for quick retrieval of materials to be reproduced and process retrieved information through the Braille translation program. Utilize customer feedback to determine effectiveness of materials and make needed adjustments. Produce additional materials for students with visual impairments as requested by Cascade Regional staff and constituent districts.
