Located in Malibu, California, HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.GENERAL DESCRIPTION:You will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials, structures and devices, with current projects spanning from formulating new materials for additive manufacturing to structure optimization for hypersonic vehicles. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative engineer to grow within our group. With more experience, the candidate can grow into the role of a modeling expert supporting multiple projects with responsibilities including writing patents, journal publications and proposals, and eventually managing research projects.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:Perform finite element (FE) modeling and simulation using Abaqus or ComsolPerform non-linear FE simulationsPerform steady-state, frequency domain, and transient FE simulations.Analyze thermal stresses, vibration responses, and temperature distributions.Interpret FE results to identify potential failureExamine experimental data in light of numerical resultsGenerate reduced order models capturing salient phenomenaCreate new designs to increase performance and resolve technical problemsDevelop new simulation tools as neededCreate CAD models using SolidWorksSummarize key findings in written documents and slidesMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:The candidate must have experience with Finite Element Analysis beyond coursework. The candidate should show demonstrated experience in debugging and trouble-shooting numerical simulations. Experience running non-linear, dynamic implicit/explicit simulations, with damage and failure is desired, as well as experience with automation routines. Design experience is highly desired. Experimental laboratory experience is a plus. The ideal candidate has creative problem solving skills, hands-on experience, and the ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently.Knowledge of Abaqus, COMSOL and Solidworks software is highly desired. Knowledge of Python and other programming languages is desired.PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation.EDUCATION DESIRED:Bachelor's or Master's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, engineering mechanics or related discipline.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required.
